In downtown Austin, there is an historic, multi-building office park that is home to Bedrock Energy – a geothermal technology and drilling company. In this commercial office park, we began our first project for Bedrock offering HVAC and plumbing along with continued project maintenance post install. This project specifically involved a retrofit upgrade installation of four 7.5-ton geothermal water sourced heat pumps replacing original split systems. This included a supplemental air cooler, two geothermal loop pumps, and all supply/return piping from the geothermal wells in the parking lot up to the units in the mezzanine. Not to mention, new ductwork, electrical equipment and controls.
This project was not without its challenges as we were working in a historic building. This made the workable space very limited, and it was within a working, occupied facility. Adding to this was the fact that most of the work had to be completed overnight and the space needed to be useable by tenants again each morning. To account for this, we provided temporary cooling for the project during the day while the system was down. Finally, we had to create custom jigs/rigging to safely remove the old units and bring the new units up to the mezzanine.
Overall, the project was a success, as we acted as the primary service provider, utilizing a good amount of in-house talent, along with procuring electrical and controls subcontractors.
